EquipmentRetrieval
Best Practices/Suggestions

comments welcome at ncretac@pctelcom.coop

The best practice for equipment retrieval is labeling and marking your equipment. An example is a label developed by the Limon Ambulance Service and the Plains To Peaks RETAC. Note that the label shows both a physical address and a post office box. Remember UPS will not deliver to a post office box.

More difficult to retrieve and also to label are Cervical Immobilization devices/headblocks.  A permanent marking system to label every piece is important. If the item is not labeled it may be considered to be "disposable"
The most commonly lost piece of equipment are straps. If you use spider straps or buckle straps it is also very important to label the equipment. Permanent marker/embroidery is a great way to identify it. It's also important to communicate with hospital personnel, NOT TO CUT THE STRAPS!!! Sager Splints are another consideration. You can see by the Sager splint, labeling can be difficult. However an engravers pen can be utilized along the shaft. Make sure that you utilize standardized labeling practices on all your equipment

Hare traction splints can be just as difficult to label. engravers pens along the barrel of the shafts work just as well as the engraving on the Sager

Best practices for labels

Sticks well to the equipment and can withstand high pressure washing, with Ink jet printed labels the ink will wash off or fade. Some print shops can print labels with indelible ink to your specifications

Best Practices for location of labels

Can be seen! label the top, label the bottom of backboards. Some agency's have branded the boards and some rely on painted on or stenciled information. Paint can be over painted, as can stencils.

Minimum Required Information required on labeling

  1. Full name of agency, LAS, could mean Limon Ambulance Service, Lamar Ambulance Service, Larry's Ambulance Service. BVFD could me a number of different agencies. (Berthoud, Brighton)

  2. Full Physical Address of Agency, not just P.O. Boxes make sure the zip code is a part of the address.

  3. Phone number of the agency
